It is essential to clean the radius of 200 to 300 metres of each residence to prevent the breeding of Dengue mosquitoes, says Deputy Director General of Medical Services Dr. Wijesuriya.

“Mosquitoes can only fly a distance of 200 to 300 metres. Therefore it is important to keep this radius around residences clean, to prevent the spread of the disease,” he said. “Dengue illness impacts liver function, especially in children. Therefore, it is extremely important to take proper rest for several weeks even after recovery,” he stressed. Dr. Wijesuriya also highlighted the need to clean the environment around residences to prevent the breeding of Dengue mosquitoes.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, 44,530 cases have been reported in 2023, with the highest number of cases from the Gampaha District which stood at 9,884.

The Western Province has recorded 22,234 cases, the highest province-wise. The Epidemiology Unit has also identified 67 high-risk MOH areas.

The month of June alone logged 5,126 Dengue cases.
