The government decided to proceed with travel restrictions till June 7, bar relaxation of them on three days in between for people to purchase essentials, Highways Minister Johnston Fernando.
The decision was taken at the meeting of Covid-19 prevention task force yesterday. However, the restrictions will be relaxed today, May 31 and June 4 for people to buy essentials from the nearest place located within walking distance.
Addressing a hurriedly convened press conference, the Minister said vehicular movements would not be allowed on these three days since they were solely meant for people to venture out for purchases from the nearest shop located within walking distance.
Earlier, the organisations representing the medical community urged the government to impose a national lockdown for two weeks as a measure to curb the third wave of Covid-19. Nearly 3,000 daily cases are reported in the country.
