An illicit sand miner who knocked down two police sergeants on duty at a check point and attempted to flee from the scene was arrested by the Kekirawa Police on Saturday night.
The injured sergeants were officers of the Criminal Investigations Branch of the Kekirawa Police. One of them was admitted to the Kekirawa hospital and the other to the Dambulla base hospital.
Police said a group of four police officers had carried out the raid on an illegal sand mining site and a tractor transporting sand had fled to evade the Police. However when two officers on a motorcycle had given chase and overtaken the tractor the driver had knocked them down.
The suspect driver was arrested and the tractor load of sand seized. He was to be produced in court yesterday. OIC Kekirawa Police CI Prasanna Welikala is conducting further investigations.
