Two suspects including a 44-year-old man from Mawanella who was deported from the UAE have been taken into custody by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) for promoting extremism, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
He said the 44-year-old raised funds in the UAE to nurture extremism. He was deported to Sri Lanka on December 5 last year.
The TID also confiscated a laptop from the suspect’s possession.
DIG Rohana said investigations disclosed that the suspect was promoting radicalism in Sri Lanka.
The TID will detain the suspect under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
Meanwhile, the TID took another 27-year-old suspect into their custody from the Batticaloa Police who was arrested for various offences.
The Police Spokesman said the suspect, a resident of Kattankudy was also indulged in radical activities and had treated Mohammed Rilvan, brother of Easter Sunday suicide attack linchpin Zahran Hashim.
The suspect was handed over to the TID under PTA regulations through a motion filed in courts.
Investigations disclosed that the suspect was promoting radicalism in Sri Lanka.
The TID will detain the suspect under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
