It is likely that the President Ranil Wickremesinghe would appoint some UNPers as new governors, former Minister Navin Dissanayake said yesterday.

“The President has powers to appoint new governors under Section 154(B) of the Constitution. Therefore, he may have an idea to appoint UNPers without any black marks as new governors,” Dissanayake said in response to a question raised by the journalists during a media briefing.

“My name is also mentioned as a candidate for a governor’s post especially in social media but I do not like to talk about myself,” he added.

Asked about a remark made by UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara that all who have left the UNP have been destroyed politically apply to his father late Minister Gamini Dissanayake, the former Minister said his father returned to the UNP and breathed his last on the UNP stage. “The conflict which my father had with late President Premadasa dragged because of the action taken by the latter. My father however returned to the UNP and became UNP candidate for the presidency. He breathed his last on the UNP stage,” Dissanayake said.
The President is to replace four provincial governors appointed by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
