Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) will begin providing COVID vaccines to those over 20 years of age around next week, Chief Medical Officer CMC Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuni said yesterday.
Dr. Wijayamuni told Daily Mirror that CMC is currently conducting a mop up programme under which those who have not had even a single jab would be searched and vaccinated.
“We have actually started a mobile vaccine programme under which we will go in search of those who have not had a single jab in the Colombo city. We will provide the vaccine for such remaining persons. I presume that we will be able to complete providing the vaccine for such persons around next week,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the CMC Standing Committee on Health and former Chief Medical Officer Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said that young people above 20 years of age in areas such as Wanathamulla , Kirulapone and Colombo Central should be vaccinated first. “People living in over-mentioned areas should be given the jab first as most of these people are daily wage earners. Also, those lower-middle-class persons living in high-rise flats should also be a priority group when it comes to vaccinating the young,” Dr. Kariywasam said.
