Four female employees of a Non-Governmental Organisation  (NGO) engaged in demining operations in Thunukkai area in Mankulam in  the Mullaitivu District had been seriously injured in an accidental  explosion of an anti-personal mine believed to have been buried by the  LTTE before its decimation in 2009, the police said.
The injured were aged between 39 and 43 years.

They were admitted to Mankulam base hospital and transferred to Kilinochchi General Hospital for further treatment.

Police said the four women had been injured in their attempt to unearth a landmine.

The Thunukkai Police are conducting further investigations.  The area remained under the LTTE control. The injured employees were  engaged in clearing the area. In the Northern Province, 96 per cent of  land had been cleared of landmines at the moment.
