Nawa Sri Lanka Nidahas Pakshaya leader Kumara Welgama’s death was caused by the injuries he sustained during the commotion on May 9, 2022, former MPs said yesterday.

“Welgama sustained serious injuries when those who launched the Aragalaya assaulted him severely on May 9, 2022. Welgama fell ill and had to be hospitalized from time to time because of the injuries he received during the Aragalaya,” former MP Piyal Nishantha said during his funeral on Monday evening.

Former MP Rajitha Senaratne has also made a similar comment and said there is no doubt that his death was caused by the attack which he had to face on May 9. “Welgama came under attack on May 9 2022 and the attackers were trying to burn his vehicle. However. one person who was aware of Welgama saved him risking his own life. His health deteriorated after the attack by the Aragalaya crowd. He was in hospital from time to time. There is no doubt that the Aragalaya caused the former MPs death,” Dr Senaratne said in a statement.

The former MP Welgama was a member of the Opposition at the time he came under attack on May 9, 2022. He passed away on Saturday September 28, 2024 and the last rights were held on Monday.
