A herd of wild elephants frequenting the Dambulla – Habarana road from Inamaluwa army camp to Digampathana Junction is in the habit of creating obstruction to traffic much to the annoyance of travellers who are compelled to feed the wild jumbos with fruits.
They said the herd obstructed the vehicles day and night to be fed by the travellers. They said the jumbos would chase after any vehicle attempting to pass without giving them food.
Residents of the area said tour guides often made it a novel experience for tourists. They said they were living in constant fear of any possible danger to their life from the marauding herd.
They pointed out that drivers and travellers are in the habit of feeding the herd with food to pass the location.
They requested the Wildlife Conservation Department to focus attention on this danger and to drive away the herd.
