Claiming that it is a huge challenge to keep the trust placed by the people on the National People’s Power (NPP), NPP member Tilvin Silva said yesterday the NPP government will make sure that the excessive power given to the NPP will not be misused and is committed to use it for the benefit of the people and to uphold democratic rights of the people.
He told a special press conference after the General Election that the NPP never expected a two-thirds majority and that the NPP has a huge responsibility to utilise the excessive power carefully.
He said there was a notion in the society that excessive power corrupts, and added that it was because the governments after 1977 used the extreme power to suppress people and to misuse public property for their personal benefits.
Silva said the NPP will not misuse the extreme power to suppress people but it will be used to develop the country, uphold democracy, create a society free of fraud and corruption and fulfil aspirations of the people. He said the NPP’s victory is significant as it is a victory brought in by the contribution of the people across the country including the north, east and the upcountry.
“People in the north have trusted a leader in the south. People have rejected racism,” he said.
Silva said NPP has increased its vote base by 1.2 million within just well over 50 days adding that people have accepted the NPP’s administration for the last month.
