Claiming that the committee appointed on restructuring the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) would submit its preliminary structure by next week, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara said yesterday the restructuring plan of the CEB based on the committee report would be submitted in Parliament within two months.
He told Parliament that the CEB should be restructured to make it a profitable venture. He said even though there were excessive staff which amounts to nearly 26,000 employees with Lanka Electricity Company (LECO) staff, most of the task of the CEB had been outsourced to the private sector.
“Most of the tasks which can be carried out by the CEB staff have been outsourced. Pruning the branches of trees, supplying new connections and imposing disconnections have been outsourced, “he said and added that the new restructuring plan would include to rectify such issues.
The Minister said he expected that the opposition would support the CEB restructuring plan.
