Two Sri Lankan passengers and an employee of a duty-free shop were arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) yesterday while attempting to smuggle into the country a quantity of gold biscuits worth Rs.10 million, Customs Spokesman Leslie Gamini said.
He said the passengers from Dubai and the shop employee were arrested with 20 pieces of gold weighing two kilogrammes at the arrival lounge after the Duty Free shop employee had attempted to smuggle out gold by concealing it inside a knee guard.
The arrest was made when the airport security officers noticed the employee’s suspicious behaviour. “Investigations had revealed that the two passengers had handed over the gold biscuits to the shop employee at the airport,” Mr. Gamini said.
The suspects are residents
of Kotahena.
