UNP Gampaha District Parliamentarian Ajith Mannapperuma whose right leg was amputated after a recent accident on the Southern Expressway, yesterday said he would return to Parliament soon even on crutches or a wheel-chair to serve the people.

“My leg was amputated below the knee and my left knee joint was also dislocated in the accident. But I am recovering fast as the doctors at the National Hospital have been helping me both mentally and physically,” Mr. Mannapperuma told the Daily Mirror while recalling his ordeal.
He said most of his colleagues in the UNP and the Government had visited him in hospital.
“My supporters organised Bodhi Poojas to invoke blessings on me and wished me a speedy recovery, which I think may have helped me to recover sooner than expected,” he said. When asked about his future political career, Mr. Mannapperuma said he was dedicated to serve the people even at the cost of his life and assured that he would take part in the budget debate on October 20. Mr. Mannapperuma hoped to buy an artificial limb from an American company at a cost of Rs. 1million.  “I do not have money to buy an artificial limb at such a cost but my supporters have offered to help me in numerous ways,” he said.
He was badly injured in an accident that took place between the 39th and 40th kilometre posts on the Southern Expressway on September 7.
One of his MSD bodyguards who was also badly injured in the accident also had his
leg amputated.
