Geolgists have confirmed that villagers need not entertain fears about the unusual noise heard from the earth at the Wewathenna playground in Kotmale.
Senior Professor of the Department of Geology in Peradeniya University Athula Senaratne who carried out an inspection of the area said the flow of water and air through an area of vacuum underground had caused the noise.
However the unusual noise had created fear psychosis compelling the villagers to leave the area for safer locations. They said they heard a noise similar to that of a water pump. They said the playground had been constructed by filling an abandoned tank.
Prof. Senaratne said a canal that fed the tank had swelled due to the heavy rain and it has been flowing through a hollow under ground and caused the unusual noise when it contacted with the vacuum.
He further said he instructed the authorities to divert the flow of the canal in a different direction.
