Casual gamers, cyber athletes, comic book fans and cos players are scheduled to unite at the annual Games Festival happening on the 27th, 28th and 29th November at the BMICH.
The festival is comprised of the Sri Lanka Cyber Games e-Sports tournament and the Lanka Comic Con. The tournament caters to gamers from the Western, Southern and Central regions of the country, where players are brought to Colombo upon qualifying for the Grand Finale.
The Southern Qualifiers will be held on the 7th and 8th of November at ESOFT Metro Campus in Matara. The Central Qualifiers will be held on the 14th and 15th of November at the Kandy City Center in the hill capital, Kandy. Winners from these two events will qualify to take part in the grand finals held at the BMICH.
The festival attracts close to 2,000 tournament participants and over 10,000 visitors to witness the games, dress up as their favourite characters and take part in a variety of other activities available at the event.
Attendees will be able to watch the best gamers in Sri Lanka face off on the main stage, take part in mini-games and win prizes, dress up as their favourite characters, take part in cosplay competitions, peruse Sri Lankan comic art, swap, buy and sell geek goodies at the flea market all while being immersed in this emerging culture.
Organised by Gamer.LK (www.gamer.lk), a multi-genre video gaming community that’s powered by digital entertainment enthusiasts, this event was first held in 2008, now being the largest of its kind in Sri Lanka.
This festival was conceived with the goal of giving digital entertainment in Sri Lanka a substantial platform for recognition, while also offering a growing digital entertainment culture the exposure it deserves. Today, the e-sports and gaming sector in Sri Lanka is an established scene that rivals other sports in size and structure in the country. Gamer.LK has also partnered with the Geek Club of Sri Lanka and PRUVE Comics to empower people who are passionate about comic book culture, resulting in the first Lanka Comic Con within the festival as well.
With the growth of this rising culture, leading multinational companies have come forward to show their support. Dialog who brings fast, low latency connections for gamers in Sri Lanka has stepped into power SLCG for the third consecutive year. “ Dialog 4G, the fastest 4G network in Sri Lanka is equipped to bridge the barrier of providing a multiplayer online platform which offers the best connectivity,” Mangala H. Hettiarachchi, General Manager, Global and Content Services of Dialog Axiata PLC said. “Dialog has also invested in hosting cloud gaming servers in partnership with gamer.lk to reduce latency and develop the multiplayer online eco system.”
HP has partnered with the event as Technology partner, showcasing the latest HP gaming technology on offer. MSI and MAS Holdings are supporting the initiative as Silver Sponsors.” Informatics Institute of Technology is the Education partner, offering game development courses for gamers who want to pursue a career in the games industry.
