In this series, we talk to people who turned their passion for food and baking into a business idea amidst lockdown and COVID-19 fears. Some have been in the market for years and others saw the new opportunity and took it! With new challenges presenting themselves in light of the current economic crisis in the country, we talk to home bakers who are navigating through these difficult times and bringing the sweet and savoury to your very own doorstep!
Home Bakers
Home based cook and baker, Sahistha Ashraf Suhaib has always had a passion for food and cooking from a very young age. After her marriage, she reignited her passion for cooking when she cooked for her in-laws for the first time and received great feedback. “In my family, everyone motivated and supported me in making a business from my passion. I call the business Bitter Sweet Corner because I think it’s important to accept the bad things as well as the good things that happen in your life.”
What do you offer?
As a baker I offer a range of cakes, cupcakes, sweets, dessert buns and brownies. I also do a variety of savoury food inspired by Indian and Pakistani food. I think my signature dish is my Enchilada that I’ve put my own Sri Lankan twist to. People love it!
Bitter Sweet Corner actually started back in November 2018. It’s been such a passion project because cooking and baking makes me happy and stress free.
What is it like running your operations in times like these?
Well, during Covid-19 lockdowns I was actually quite worried about how I was going to manage my small business but fortunately, we were able to get a curfew pass to travel and deliver our goods during the lockdown and I got to keep business going and delivering my stuff to our customers during those lockdowns. Nowadays of course, the biggest challenge is the economic crisis that is constantly increasing the cost of ingredients. But we are always trying our best to give the best prices to our valuable customers.
How are you ensuring the proper hygiene measures are taken in preparation and delivery?
I always ensure to choose the best ingredients for my recipes. Being a home baker is not easy because you are working from home, but I’ve made sure that I have a separate area for all my business work.
What do you enjoy about baking and operating your own home baking business?
I’ve always been very passionate about cooking and baking. I think it’s very satisfying and therapeutic. Running my own business also allows me to make an extra income that helps me personally.
Honestly, I’m just trying to give my customers the best prices. These days people think twice before they order so that’s difficult. Fortunately, I have a good base of loyal customers who continuously help us grow.
What is next for your brand?
Right now we offer one day classes on desserts and savoury basic cake classes. I’m hoping to start a general cookery class from September onwards.
Any advice to anyone who wants to start their own business?
Bring your talents to the world, focus on your product and your customers. Always give your best to the world. Don’t target for the money. Build your name and your brand and then success will come to you
