In this series, we talk to people who turned their passion for food and baking into a business idea amidst lockdown and COVID-19 fears. Some have been in the market for years and others saw the new opportunity and took it! These home businesses are changing the game and have overcome the odds of running a business during quarantine.
With increased restrictions once more, we talk to home bakers who are operating during these times to bring the sweet and savoury to your very own doorstep!
Quarantine
Home Bakers
Homebaker, Nuha Fahim has always enjoyed baking and found a great opportunity amidst the pandemic to start a home baking business. “I was very excited to start my own baking business and I was thinking of names and I wanted to include something that’s used in every baked good and the obvious answer was ‘butter’! So Butter Bake was created as a result.”
What do you offer?
We do customised cakes and cupcakes and other baked goods like brownies and donuts. We offer a variety of designs and flavours. Our signature item is the Coffee Cake and some of my personal favourite items are our chocolatey brownies, sugar cookies and cupcakes!
When did you start operations?
I was fond of baking from a very young age but I managed to come up with a business model for Butter Bakes during the pandemic and the lockdowns and got started!
What is Butter Bakes signature style?
I think our signature style is simple and elegant designs with a focus on a unique and heavenly taste.
What is it like running your operations in times like these?
How are you ensuring the proper hygiene measures are taken in preparation and delivery?
I’m very careful and take all the proper hygiene measures necessary. I ensure that nothing gets mixed with my edibles and use all the safety measures in the process of making the goods and also during delivery.
What do you enjoy about baking and operating your own home baking business?
I actually love the whole process of running my business; from something simple as just buying the goods and then creating something great to handing it over carefully to our customers.
How do you see home bakers going forward post Covid?
I think, with the volatility in the country and the constant shut downs, it is a little difficult for small scale businesses such as myself to move forward.
What’s next for your brand?
Right now, my next plan for my business is to bring back weekly sales into action and have my business registered for Uber Eats so I can start taking orders from Uber Eats and my goodies will be available to my customers easily.
Any advice to anyone who wants to start their own business?
Always try creating your own recipes and help others grow while you are at it and it will take you a long way ahead!
