Friends

The definition of friendship is “a relationship between people who like each other and enjoy each other’s company” and is based on mutual respect and admiration An example of friendship is when you have a buddy with whom you like to do things and also be able to discuss whatever, both good and bad, freely whilst assured that it will not be repeated. Friends are always there for one another in good times and bad. Friends also help us deal with stress, make better lifestyle choices that keep us strong and allow us to rebound from health issues and disease more quickly. Friendship is equally important to our mental health.  Studies have suggested that spending time with positive friends changes our outlook for the better.

There are some who think that having dozens of friends as a great achievement and an indication of their popularity. This rent a crowd type who hang around us are of no use at a time of need. They will vanish unless they could benefit even at that moment. For example, if you are ill there will be a so-called friend who will visit you in hospital with a dozen oranges and let everyone know of their generosity. The real friend would not bother about the oranges; instead, will volunteer to stay the night and take care of you even if you are home.

Just because you are invited to a dinner or a brunch, it does not mean the group are great friends; it is just a case of acquaintances getting together. Many people mistake such acquaintances as being good or close friends, which is rubbish. Backbiting and slander are common traits in Colombo.  Nevertheless, to be seen as being in the inner circle of a group, those who are so slandered do not seem to mind. It is quite pathetic watching some of these top social climbers willing to lower their standards just to hang out with such so-called friends.

The pandemic has made some people realise what a worthless lot of friends they spend time with. Many were so enlightened when they had to spend enforced time at home, which allowed for reflection of themselves and life in general.   Some have stepped aside from those they used to hang out with whilst others continue with the bogus lifestyle.

All you consider friends are not necessarily so. Know your friends and keep your circle small.

When reflecting on life, I am often taken to the following beautiful quote by Kahlil Gibran: “Travel and tell no one, live a true love story and tell no one, live happily and tell no one, people ruin beautiful things.”
