Happening Colombo

Colombo has taken a 180 degree turn and gone back to, or should I say an even better, a happening place. I was delighted to see all the restaurants, bars and nightclubs packed to full capacity on a Friday night. My curiosity took me to many places to check them out. Yes, Colombo was back to normal. The difference is that more people are enjoying drinking local brands of all the varieties of beverage on offer. The Jayawardhanapura area seems to be very happening with the opening of an immensely popular gigantic convention centre and banquet hall, offering all the facilities and a very cooperative staff, and can accommodate over 2000 people at any given time. The Centre also has a few restaurants offering many different cuisine. These are packed to the brim on any given day. The food is of superior quality and value for money. The neighbourhood is delighted owing to the convenience of either being able to eat locally or grab some take away food.

The Aluth Kade area has some amazing street food and local delicacies and are worth a visit. Food stalls, or night kades as they are called, are aplenty. Delicious, tasty, freshly cooked local food is available every night. It is worth a visit, especially if you have foreign guests and wish to share delicious street food. All of this is worth visiting with the family too.

Notably, most of these happening night clubs and bars are packed with trendily dressed young people and when one of my age pops into them I look like the father or grandfather popping in to check on the kid.  To see all these young people having a wonderful time, throbbing to the excellent music brings hope.

I often wondered why people were still planning to open bars, lounges and nightclubs amid these crises  of one after another. Looking at them now, I understand there is a market for all of them, whether in Colombo or greater Colombo.  I am simply happy to see that all of them are packed and throbbing to the pulse of the music.
It is a new world out there with lots of new restaurants and night life offering great and fresh ideas.  All of them are well worth a visit.
