Integrating

“A yokel can leave the village but the village will never leave the yokel,” is what came to my mind when I saw the number of video clips flying around of Sri Lankans brawling at a party overseas.  The yakko behaviour of some of our immigrants who still think they are living in their country of birth, seemed to have enjoyed the party and then ended the event with a brawl. Remarkably like what happens over here. It made me wonder why they ever left this country to go to another to behave in the same shameful way. The general nature of such parties are shameful but hilarious.

We do not have to wonder why there are issues in obtaining a visa, especially to travel to the developed countries. After much jumping through hoops and the visa is obtained, the problems begin when you arrive in the country overseas.  The mere sight of a Sri Lankan passport seem to trigger the Authorities to full alert.

The more refined lot who have immigrated legally, assimilate into their newfound land, get to know its citizens and live normal lives, especially the professionals.

Then come the other lot, who yet want to mix only with other immigrants of their country of birth and lead lives as they did back home.  Heart of hearts they long to be in Sri Lanka, whatever shape it is in but realise that greener pastures are more beneficial. However, even though most of them have a better life overseas, their entire life is spent living vicariously. Additionally, some seem envious of whatever is going on here as they can see that we still live comfortable and happy lives however good or bad the situation is. Their whole lives are monitoring what is happening over here instead of integrating with the locals there and enjoying what the country has to offer and living life to the fullest.

I have to say that the majority who migrated to Australia seem to be the happiest.  They are leading productive happy lives and fitting well into the community. Those living in the West seem to be the ones who are constantly watching over us and spewing hatred.  This makes you wonder whether their lives are miserable over there.

Integrating wherever you are is the key to happiness when migrating and forgetting the land you deserted for greener pastures.
