In this series, we talk to people who turned their passion for food and baking into a business idea amidst lockdown and COVID-19 fears. Some have been in the market for years and others saw the new opportunity and took it! These home businesses are changing the game and have overcome the odds of running a business during quarantine.

With increased restrictions once more, we talk to home bakers who are operating during these times to bring the sweet and savoury to your very own doorstep!

Quarantine home bakers

Shahana Fazal’s journey to starting her own home business is a rather fascinating story. She was motivated by a social influencer who was impressed by her chocolate biscuit pudding and red velvet jars and her words of encouragement that Shahana can be both a home maker and a businesswoman. “So I started Not Just JARS because I was empowered to create my own identity while doing something I love!”

What do you offer?

We do Red Velvet jars, CBP jars, Ice Cream Brownie jars, Brownies and Frappes. Our best seller is our Nutella Brownies and it’s also my personal favourite since my kids enjoy it thoroughly.

When did you start operations?

During the latter part of 2019, my brothers opened their own restaurant and I supplied a few Red Velvet and CBP Jars. Then around the time lockdown started back in March 2020, Not Just Jars was officially in business!

What is it like running your operations in times like these?

Of course, there were a few ups and downs but I was able to get all the ingredients and utensils to my doorstep. Furthermore, Uber and PickMe supports small scale businesses with their services so I was able to successfully run my business during the pandemic and especially during the lockdowns.

How are you ensuring the proper hygiene measures are taken in preparation and delivery?

We are very careful with our hygiene measure. I use separate utensils and baking wares and use gloves during the baking and packaging process. During deliveries, I make sure the carrier and myself are following proper COVID guidelines.

What do you enjoy about baking and operating your own home baking business?

I enjoy baking since I was able to reveal my hidden talents and honestly, I was shocked by the response. I had a strong intuition saying this might be the career changing point in my life. The most glorious feeling about my home baking business is that it made me feel independent.

How do you see home bakers going forward post Covid?

Even though the pandemic and the lockdowns have caused much distress globally, it was a positive impact for Not Just JARS. The demand and supply increased drastically and gained immense popularity.

What’s next for your brand?

I am hoping to start a dessert bistro to expand my business. Hopefully once the situation in the country lessens, I will be taking the necessary steps.

What’s your signature style?

Like everyone says the more chocolate, the merrier it is!!

Any advice to anyone who wants to start their own business?

Do not get consumed by other peoples’ opinions and thoughts. Trust your gut, believe in yourself and be the best version of yourself.
