The Police Department will be armed to the teeth with the backing of the tri-forces and the Special Task Force in controlling and countering the Colombo’s security today but said no hindrance will be brought upon any peaceful and law abiding protestors.
The police will respect the citizen’s right to protest, demonstrate or the freedom of expression under the Constitution and will not hinder their actions, but will not tolerate any instances of violation of the law with violent or riotous behaviour.
When contacted Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa told the Daily Mirror the police will get support from the tri-forces and the Police Special Task Force (STF) in adequate numbers to maintain security in the city especially in the mass protest sight, which is expected to flood with large crowds today.
Asked about the strength of the police force deployed today SSP Thalduwa said even he doesn’t have such figures with him and also do not intend to publicize such data as this is no regular instance but a major protest.
“We will enforce the law unhesitatingly if there’s a breach or any acts of violence occur during today’s protests, and countrywide police stations have been given instructions to counter such situations,” the spokesperson said.
“We have also informed the Army to assist us at any given moment today and being watchful of any vandalism or acts of purported riots,” he further said.
SSP Thalduwa however said no court order had been issued yesterday to prevent any protesters entering certain locations in the city by the mass protestors, although it was requested by the police.
