The 113th JR Jayewardene Birth commemoration ceremony, which was organized by the JR Jayewardene memorial committee and the main UNP branch in Japan was held in Japan with the cooperation of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Tokyo, the Japanese government and non-government organizations.
According to Rasitha Chandradasa, the main organiser of the event, more than 150 Japanese and Sri Lankans participated in the event with Sri Lankan Ambassador Prof. Ganganath Disanayake as the chief guest.
Guests were welcomed with a traditional Sinhalese percussion performance followed by the national anthems of Japan and Sri Lanka with religious sermons and lighting of the traditional oil lamp.

Later, the chief guest, other distinguished guests, embassy staff and representatives from the Japan UNP branch placed flower bouquets at the foot of the JR Jayewardene statue.
Participants were entertained with an interesting quiz programme and winners awarded gift vouchers as well.
The organizing committee also plans to organize similar events to celebrate the achievements of former president JR Jayewardene and to further bridge the cultural gap between Sri Lanka and Japan.
