Ballast water contains an assortment of biological materials, including animals, viruses, plants, and bacteria. These materials often include invasive, exotic species, non-native, nuisance that can cause wide-ranging environmental and economic damage to aquatic flora and fauna along with severe human health problems.

When these mighty rivers, like the Ganga, the Yamuna, the Aciravati reach the great Ocean, they lose their former names and designations, and are reckoned just as the great Ocean. Though all the streams of the world flow into the great Ocean and rains falls into it from the sky, yet there appears neither a decrease nor an increase in the great Ocean. The great Ocean has only one taste, that of salt. In the great Ocean there are many and variegated precious things. The great Ocean is the abode of vast creatures.
The Buddha responded saying, “In this teaching and discipline: there is a gradual training, gradual practice….. Even so the Order will not tolerate a person who is immoral, and expels such a person. Even so when members of the four castes -nobles, brahmins go forth from home into homelessness life. The Nibbana element that is without a remainder of substrata of existence; there is no decrease nor increase even if many monks enter it. Even so this teaching and discipline has only one taste, the taste of liberation. Even so there is in this teaching and discipline much that is precious. Even so this teaching and discipline is the domain of great beings. This is very important in the context of practicing the Dhamma. One should be wise enough to understand the nature of the Dhamma. It is impossible to realise the Dhamma in a hasty manner.”
In the glorious days of the sailing ships up to end of 19th century, there was no destruction to any form of ocean or marine resources. Neither, the Buddha, nor Parhada spoke of loss of biodiversity, threat to flora and fauna, in the ocean then. Today, sustainable development is the theme.
The vessel was deprival of entry into Hamad Port in Qatar and Hazira Port in India is incorrect. The ship went through discharge and loading in both ports and continued on its scheduled journey to Colombo. Applications made at two ports to offload a nitric acid container that was leaking, but advised there were no facilities or expertise available to deal with the leak.

All this was performed under extreme weather conditions.
Measures are underway according to Dharshani Lahandapura, Chairperson, Marine Environment Protection Authority –MEPA, to protect the marine environment if the MV X-Press Pearl ship sinks. Each of the state agency entangled in this storm should conduct independent inquires, sans political authority to reveal the truth.
