He believed that knowledge is power

I came to know Mr Gamini Gunawardana when he was teaching at “ GAMINI VIDYALAYA” Nuwara Eliya for a brief period awaiting His university results.  I was stationed in Nuwara Eliya as a probationary sub-inspector. He never expressed his intention to join the Police Dapartment.

In 1964 I met him when I was stationed at the Matara Police Station as assistant to the OIC crimes Late SSP Dudley  Vonhart. He was very humble and had courtesies which normally directly recruited ASP’s do not possess in view of position they hold over many senior officers. I never had the privilege of working for a long time at Matara because by the end of the year I was transferred to the Grand Pass  Police Station. But I continued to be in touch with him in the field of Industrial security. This was when ever I needed his assistance whilst he served in the CID. He was an officer who was willing to learn from anyone as it was clearly displayed when he worked in the CID along with Late senior DIG Mr Tyrrel Gunatilaka who was DIRECTOR and LATER DIG CID and who was a controversial figure with the changes of governments.

However he displayed a high sense of loyalty and gratitude to late Mr Tyrrel Gunatilaka. I always sought  the advise of Mr Gamini Gunwaradana regarding many issues pertaining to Industrial security. His integrity was of a very high order not only in the Police but when he served as Chairman of  The Lotteries Board.
It is unfortunate that he departed from this world quite early.

I THOUGHT HE BELIEVED IN THIS SAYING: “THE MORE OF EVERYTHING YOU SHARE
THE MORE YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE SPARED-
THE MORE YOU LOVE, THE MORE YOU WILL FIND
THAT LIFE IS GOOD & FRIENDS ARE KIND”
