‘Live Well Health Fair’ to promote health and wellness among youth, senior citizens

‘Suwa Diviya’, a non-profit initiative committed to mitigate the rising threat of diabetes has organised a health fair to be held at the end of the month.
Titled ‘Live Well Health Fair 2024’ – the first event of its kind in Sri Lanka will be held on November 30, at the Arcade Independence Square, Colombo 7 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. 
The event focuses on promoting a healthy lifestyle and preventative health measures, primarily targeting children, the youth, and senior citizens in the country. 
The organisation states that this groundbreaking health initiative revolves around the core belief that health education and raising awareness are essential elements that must be integrated into modern lifestyles. With the increasing rate of non-communicable diseases among the younger population, the ‘Live Well Health Fair’ seeks to empower people with expert insights and tools to lead healthier lives. Informative sessions will be conducted on critical topics such as diabetes management, heart health, nutrition, and physical fitness, by both public and private sector medical professionals. Furthermore, attendees will be able to access free health screenings, including a check-up of the Body Mass Index (BMI), blood glucose level, vision tests, and blood pressure levels, feet assessment for diabetics along with exclusive deals for food and wellness products from several leading brands.

Other event highlights include healthy cooking demonstrations, fitness activities, health quizzes and practical nutrition tips. There will be a dedicated kids’ zone for children, featuring games designed to educate young minds on healthy living as well as a raffle draw where participants may stand a chance to win prizes, including home gardening kits and yoga sessions. 
When asked about the long term impact the initiative is believed to have on the community, Dr. Kayathri Periasamy,the founder of Suwa Diviya said that their main goal is to raise awareness and eventually, prevent the risk of diabetes which has affected countless individuals in our country. “Prevention is all about changing our day-to-day behaviour” she added. There will be medical professionals to educate both children and adults on how they can shift to a healthier lifestyle and help deliver the required tools to do so. Dr. Periasamy further said that through this event, they hope to spread the message regarding the manner in which this issue can be easily solved with a strong community bond. “This is a private-public partnership and if everyone comes together to support each other it will be successful in the long run.”
