On August 16th, the Rotary Club of Colombo Centennial took a significant step in supporting education by distributing educational workbooks to students of Diyatalawa Maha Vidyalaya, covering grades up to year five.
This initiative falls under Rotary’s focus on Basic Education and Literacy, one of the six core areas recognised by Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation as organisational priorities.
Educational needs
Through projects such as these, Rotarians address local educational needs in an impactful way. The distribution of educational workbooks can have a significant positive impact on students and the learning process. The workbooks, which enrich the curriculum, were distributed to benefit these underprivileged students of Diyatalawa Maha Vidyalaya, established in 1976 as a primary school with just 14 students. The school now proudly serves approximately 1,700 students, including those in its English medium stream. The school’s academic excellence is highlighted by its success in securing an average of 7-8 university placements annually.
The distribution ceremony began with a warm welcome for the Colombo Centennials, led by a procession featuring the school band. The event was organised with the support extended by the Security Forces Commander Central, Major General Lasantha Rodrigo, and his dedicated team, who played a crucial role in coordinating with the school to ensure the event’s success.
Noble gesture
The workbooks were donated by Badra Wikramasuriya, and the Colombo Centennials express their deep gratitude for her noble gesture. The school principal’s thought-provoking welcome address emphasised the importance of meeting the school’s needs and setting the tone for the day’s activities.
Major General Lasantha Rodrigo, along with the President of the Rotary Club of Colombo Centennials, Rotarian Crysantha Perera, and other members, led the distribution of the books.
