Reminiscing the life and times of a remarkable educator

Education is the foundation that prepares us for life. It instructs us, imparts knowledge, enriches our horizons and gives us the tools to go out into the world and be the best version of ourselves. Teachers are the fundamental instruments in the path of education. They guide us, coach us, accompany us, encourage us and give their best for us.

The late Sister Thomas Aquinas (Affectionately named by the students as Tommy) was every bit of these characteristics. When she arrived at St Bridget’s Convent in the early-70s, we, as young, impressionable students, looked on her with respect and affection. She was beautiful, had a lovely smile and twinkling eyes; and a glint that could subdue the most ardent of mischief-makers. We, as the class of 1971, can testify to that! She carried herself with elegance and her eyes resonated kindness.

She taught us Religion and English Literature, with a passion that could not but induce an ‘envy’ to get down on it, engage ourselves in the subject and learn from the wisdom transpired by the beautiful teacher she was. Don’t get us wrong, the class of 1971 was not comprised of saints, nor were we easy to handle. Tommy, however, handled it all with a certain ‘elan’, calm, yet stern, accompanied by that steely cool and glint that she was ‘not going to have any of it’. She gave of herself, fully and unconditionally, encouraging and firm in her teaching. She inspired us.
Some of us kept in touch with her throughout the years and continued to enjoy her company, her wit and lovely presence.

Whilst we mourn the passing of a remarkable educator and person, we cherish those memories, her guidance and friendship, and are grateful for her presence in our lives. We celebrate who she was, what she brought to us as students, and as adults. Her innate beauty will remain always in our hearts. God bless you, Sister Thomas. Heaven’s wonder has been increased with another beautiful presence.

Thank you, dear Sister Thomas for all your teaching academically and informally.
May your Soul Rest in Peace, dear Sister Thomas!
