The fifth edition of the book ‘Awasan Wisaduma’ (Die Endlosung) written by veteran journalist, photographer and writer Priyanjan Suresh de Silva was released recently.
Originally released in 2002, the book is a comprehensive research on one of the darkest periods in human history during which Nazi Germany, from 1933 to 1945, under Adolf Hitler, the world came to know that nearly six millions of Jews and five million belonged to nearly 30 nationalities were completely wiped out. This marked one of the cruelest mass killings in the human history and Priyanjan had gathered facts from original sources while travelling around Germany, visiting some of Nazi concentration camps, museums, archives, libraries and by studying rare researches done during that the period.
Having won a scholarship on journalism and photography, Priyanjan went to Berlin in 1995 and planned to do a photographic project on Buchenwald camp-a Nazi concentration camp established in July 1937. Priyanjan visited Buchenwald, one of the first and the largest of the concentration camps, in addition to many other sites related to holocaust.
The Sinhala title of the book is ‘Awasan Wisaduma’ and in English is ‘Final Solution’. The title of the book refelcts the words ‘Die Endlosung’ the German term which was used for the complete elimination of Jews.
With ‘Awasan Wisaduma’ Priyanjan takes us through some of the most pathetic, sorrowful and soul stirring facts of humanity, but his fascinating writing style keeps us glued till the reader gets to the last page of the publication.
Written with firsthand experiences, Priyanjan’s book could be ranked as one of the best written on Nazi Germany and the holocaust.
‘Awasan Wisaduma’ is now available at all leading bookshops and at the Colombo International Book Fair.
