The team “Water Benders” has set forth to provide access to clean water to people in the village of Iddagahapitiya, Wathugahamulla in the North Western Province in Sri Lanka through project “ÈúOdrd”
Iddagahapitiya happens to be a wonderful community with devoted and gentle residents. There are approximately 85 families in the area who depend on farming as their sole livelihood. However, they face extreme difficulties during the dry season due to the inability to obtain water for their daily needs. Thereby, they rely significantly on rainwater.
The neighborhood features a huge well that can be used to retain water. Yet water cannot be stored in it, given the damage between the two ends, and the villagers lack the requisite financial resources and equipment to mend it themselves. Further, they look to stow the water in storage tanks, but they cannot do so due to the extreme cost. The residents are now left with nothing but optimism in the face of all of these challenges. Most importantly, the village folk of Iddagahapitiya has been adversely affected due to the lack of access to purified drinking water for 6-7 years.
Therefore, we intend to provide clean water to the village and work on a stable solution for the inaccessibility of water during the dry season. We also plan to repair the tube wells and plant trees to help nourish the underground water sources. To round off the project, we have decided to hold an awareness programme to educate the villagers on the effective purification of water and waterborne diseases that could spread through improper purification methods.
In conclusion, project “ÈúOdrd” aims to provide solutions to areas in need of urgent action; especially in a developing country such as Sri Lanka. The project is organized to address the following Sustainable Development Goals from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that all United Nations Member States adopt.
Clean Water and Sanitation (Supporting local engagement in water and Sanitation management)
Good Health and Well-being, Sustainable Cities as Communities Thus, this initiative has at its heart the aspiration of giving hope and the promise of a better future to individuals who are in dire need of assistance.
