The focal point of World Environment Day was addressing the issue of plastic pollution through the #BeatPlasticPollution campaign. The world is currently experiencing an overwhelming influx of plastic. Each year, over 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced, with half of it being designed for single-use purposes. Shockingly, less than 10 per cent of this plastic is recycled. Furthermore, microplastics, which are not widely recognized, contaminate the food we consume, the water we drink, and even the air we breathe. Many plastic products contain harmful additives that can endanger our health.
Against this backdrop, the World Environment Day event took place on June 5, 2023, organized by the Sri Lankan Girl Guide Association in collaboration with Sirasa TV and the Capital Maharaja Group. The event was held under the captivating theme of ‘Reviva 23’, a promising and exciting platform for environment revival and rejuvenation.
During this momentous event, the Thuru Kepakaru Campaign, an esteemed tree-planting initiative in collaboration with Gammadda, proudly presented a collection of plants to the Girl Guides, symbolizing their valuable contribution to reforestation and tree-planting efforts. This sustained interest highlights their commitment to preserving and nurturing the environment.
