The Embassy of Switzerland to Sri Lanka and the Maldives and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have come together to organize a photo exhibition, titled “75 Years of the Geneva Conventions: Global and Sri Lankan Perspectives” in Kandy, in collaboration with the University of Peradeniya. The exhibition is organised to mark the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, the cornerstone of international humanitarian law (IHL) which regulates the conduct of armed conflict to preserve humanity and reduce suffering, even in the worst of wartime. The exhibition will consist of two parts: ‘Dialogues in Humanity’, a collaboration with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Photo Elysée, museum for photography in Lausanne and the ICRC and a selection of photos from the ICRC’s audio-visual archives on the history of the Geneva Conventions and the protections afforded by them.
The exhibition which was opened to the public on November 29 will continue till December 9 at the Exhibition Hall, New Library Building, Main Library, University of Peradeniya from 8.00am to 4.00pm. Initially unveiled at the BMICH, Colombo in August this year, the exhibition will also travel to Jaffna in December, upon completing its tour of Kandy. The exhibition will provide viewers an opportunity to explore the enduring importance of international humanitarian law.
