Concerns are mounting in the UK Parliament over the potential acceptance of Sri Lankan asylum seekers, currently located in Diego Garcia, with allegations surfacing that some may have criminal records, including serious charges such as child abuse.
Nick Timothy, the Conservative MP for West Suffolk, voiced his apprehension regarding the proposed agreement to take in 61 Sri Lankan asylum seekers currently located in Diego Garcia.
Timothy criticized the UK’s consideration of this plan, labeling it “ridiculous” and emphasising the serious implications for national safety. During his address, he underscored that these asylum seekers might pose a risk, prompting him to raise the issue with the Home Office. However, he expressed frustration at the lack of response and action from the government.
Timothy also called upon Ministers in the Foreign Office to ensure that thorough background checks are conducted in Sri Lanka and Diego Garcia. He insisted that no individuals with criminal backgrounds or allegations of abuse should be permitted entry into the UK.
In response, Stephen Doughty, Minister of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, acknowledged the situation inherited by the government concerning Tamil migrants from India and Sri Lanka. He reassured that the government’s objective is to find a solution that prioritises the welfare of migrants while avoiding the establishment of a perilous new migration route. Doughty affirmed that safeguarding concerns are paramount and are being taken seriously by the Home Office and relevant ministers.
