The Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday issued a warrant for the arrest of newly elected Jaffna District Parliamentarian Dr Ramanathan Archchuna for failing to appear before the court in connection with a road traffic accident that occurred in 2021.

It was revealed that the warrant was issued against the suspect, Ramanathan Archchuna, considering the fact that he had repeatedly evaded court hearings on multiple occasions.

Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Ratnayake ordered the warrant to be executed by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Jaffna.

It is alleged that Dr Ramanathan Archchuna caused the traffic accident and assaulted an individual on or around March 22, 2021, on Baseline Road in Colombo.

Counsel appearing on behalf of the aggrieved party informed the court that his client sustained serious injuries during the accident and was further assaulted by the suspect following a verbal dispute after the incident.

Counsel further submitted to the court that the suspect had evaded court on the last hearing date as well, but the warrant issued in this regard had not been executed.

Taking into consideration the facts, the Additional Magistrate ordered that the arrest warrant issued yesterday be executed by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Jaffna.

Counsel Asanka Mendis appeared for the aggrieved party.
