Paddy fields and the surrounding jungles in the Monaragala district are teeming with flocks of migratory birds as usual due to the winter season in many countries.

Flocks of birds of different species, have made their abode in the jungles and the paddy fields in the environs of tanks and lakes near the Yala national park creating a lovely and attractive sight.

The painted stork with its rose coloured wings is the most beautiful among them and are seen in large flocks.

Environmentalists are of the opinion that these birds migrate from South Asia , the Himalayan range and the wetlands of South East Asia.

They said that the jungles in the vicinity of tanks and lakes and marshes were the habitats of the migratory birds where they breed freely until they fly away in a few months.
