The Freedom People’s Congress (FPC) yesterday alleged that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s decision to postpone the Provincial Council election in January 2023 without justifiable reasons was a “political abortion” committed after a mass corruption.
Party leader Dullas Alahapperuma, in a letter to the media, which was also copied to the President, the Opposition Leader, all Members of Parliament, and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), stated that the FPC plans to take legal action against the former President Wickremesinghe for the alleged misuse of Rs. 720 million in public funds. Alahapperuma said that Wickremesinghe’s government’s decision to cancel the elections resulted in unnecessary expenditure of approximately 10% of the overall projected budget, leading to a loss of Rs. 720 million. Claiming that the government’s actions not only undermined democratic processes but also imposed a financial burden on the public, the former minister emphasized that taxpayer funds could have been better utilized for essential services such as education and healthcare.
He also expressed that the FPC expects the current President and government to take action against those responsible for these economic wrongdoings. He also stated that every political party would welcome the recent Cabinet decision to cancel the previous nomination list, call for fresh nominations, and hold the Provincial Council election.
