I am studying whether the Provincial Councils are a burden to the Government and whether the system should  be abolished, Provincial Councils & Local Government State Minister Dr. Sarath Weerasekera said

“We will have to see how much funds are being annually allocated for Provincial Councils and whether  constructive progress has been made so far by the Provincial Councils,” Dr.Weerasekera told Daily Mirror.   “I have to make my observation on this and get a clear picture on the entire Provincial Council system. Most importantly, we have to look at whether the people have benefited from the system. If not , it is a mere  waste of public funds,” he said.   He emphasised that  as per his observations, Provincial Councils were a burden to the government and that people had not benefited from the  system. “As such, we are contemplating to abolish the system,”

he added.
