Land officer arrested for allegedly accepting bribe from businessman

A land officer in the Kekirawa Divisional Secretariat was arrested yesterday by the Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

The 33-year-old land officer was a resident of Diulankadawala in Polonnaruwa.

He is alleged to have accepted a gratification of Rs.200,000 from a businessman to prepare a land grant. Officials of the Bribery Commission had initiated investigations on a complaint received from the businessman.

The Land Officer is alleged to have demanded Rs.500,000 and accepted Rs.200,000 as a part of it.

He was produced before Kekirawa Magistrate Mrs. D.P.M.S.Karunaratne and remanded till August 22. The magistrate ordered the Prison Superintendent to produce the suspect before Colombo Magistrate on that date.
