A large number of MPs representing Parliament for the first time since August 2020 have lost their pensions due to desolution of Parliament, Daily Mirror learns.
“No MP who represented Parliament for the first time since 2020 have completed five years. Around 65 MPs who came into Parliament for the first time in 2020 will not be entitled to the pension. However. even if any MP had represented the House before will be entitled to a pension even if he or she had not spent five years in Parliament since 2020,” Director Communications Parliament Jayalath Perera said. Those who have lost their pensions include MPs from SLPP, SJB and few from minority Tamil parties. Pensions are given to MPs under MP Pensions Act No 1 of 1977. An MP is entitled to a monthly pension worth one third of his salary if he or she has been in Parliament for five years while an MP is entitled to a pension of two thirds of his or her salary if they have been in Parliament for ten years.
