Only President should contest presidential election, others should refrain from fielding candidates - Wajira

United National Party (UNP) Chairman MP Wajira Abeywardana said non should contest the presidential election other than sitting President Ranil Wickremesinghe enabling him to be the candidate of the nation. 

Mr. Abeywardana told Daily Mirror that only the President is qualified enough to run the country and therefore others should not seek to field candidates .   

“The President is the candidate of the nation. He is not going to be the candidate of any party. The nation should decide whether the country is entrusted in his hands or not. The other parties should refrain from seeking to field any candidate,” he said.  

The Election Commission is expected to declare the presidential election after July 17. Polling will take place on a day between September 17 and October 17.
