Promotion the recycling of polythene is an effective method to preserve the environment rather than banning it, President of Polythene products and Recycling Industrialists Association President- Anura vithanage said yesterday.
Mr. Vithanage said banning of polythene will affect 500,000 people who depended on the production of polythene industry. “Also the industry of recycling of polythene too will be affected in such a situation,” Mr. Vithanage said.
He said the recycling industry was already affected as polythene collected as garbage was only 7% of the total garbage collected daily in Sri Lanka.
“Countries such as Sri Lanka need a programme to recycle polythene rather than banning it,” he added.
“A ban was imposed on polythene during the regime of former President Maithripala Sirisena but it had not severed any purpose. However, the present government appears to be more positive as it has decided to focus on recycling rather than banning polythene,” he said.
