The prices of several vegetable varieties at the Thambuttegama Economic Centre dropped sharply yesterday morning due to the prevailing heavy rains, which caused damage to vegetable stocks
The Chairman of the Economic Centre, Sunil Seneviratne, said this had compelled farmers and traders to dispose of their vegetable stocks
He pointed out that the price of green chillies had declined from Rs. 900 to Rs. 500 and low-country beans had dropped to Rs. 150 a kilo. He said the prices of several other varieties of vegetables had reduced in a large proportion when compared to the previous days.
The Chairman said the stocks of vegetables received at the Economic Centre had declined from the usual 300,000 kilos to 150,000 kilos yesterday.
