Two lady teachers of St.Martin De Porres Maha Vidyalaya in Wennappuwa were arrested in connection with the death of a schoolgirl whom they are alleged to have severely assaulted, The 16 year old victim a Grade ten student of the school was due to sit for the GCE Ordinary Level next year, She had been under treatment for about three months before she died yesterday. The two teachers had assaulted her for leaving the class room with several others during the first period and returning late. She had fainted in the class room and admitted to hospital by her parents. Police said she had been subject to emergency surgery at the Marawila hospital and was transferred in critical condition to the Colombo National Hospital and transferred again to the Ragama teaching hospital where she breathed her last after being under treatment in the Intensive Care Unit for about three months. The two lady teachers were produced before the Marawila Acting Magistrate and remanded till today.(18)
