While proposing to abolish the Executive Presidency, National Languages and Social Integration, Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara yesterday said his party would back President Mahinda Rajapaksa at a future presidential election only if he decided to join the fray as a normal candidate.
Admitting that the President would not face much resistance at an election, going by his popularity and previous winning streaks, the minister attributed the people’s sufferings to the decrease in party votes at the recent Uva PC elections.
“The JVP couldn’t improve either, as it remained in its usual third position. Moves should be made to enhance the living standards of the people and introduce a new voting system in addition to an effective mode of governance that can feel the pulse of the people.” the Minister further added.
