The white House has virtually been turned into a white-washed sepulchre with the defeated President Donald Trump refusing to concede defeat as traditionally done in the United States which is considered by the free world as a model democracy with checks and balances. Worse still, the Republican Party-which boasts of the legendary President Abraham Lincoln—is adding its dead bones to the sepulchre with most of its members, including Senate leader Mitch McConnell not insisting that the dangerously unpredictable and pathological liar Donald Trump should concede defeat.
Most independent analysts however believe he may do so when the 50 States officially certify the results on November 20 and the Electoral College meets on December 14. Democratic Party contender former Vice President Joe Biden by yesterday had won a clear majority of 290 votes in the Electoral College which comprises 538 members. In the popular vote President-elect Biden by yesterday had polled more than 77 million votes—the highest since the famous President Franklin D. Roosevelt polled in the 1930’s. Mr Trump, despite all his public madness, also polled more than 71 million votes and independent analysts say most of these votes came from its base which largely comprises white racist supremacists who still want to dominate poor countries and plunder their wealth and resources. Veteran politician Biden—who has been a senator for several decades and was Vice President in the Barack Obama administration from 2008 to 2016—is taking with a smile Mr. Trump’s madness and threat to democracy. When asked by reporters about what he thought of Mr. Trump’s failure to concede defeat, President-elect Biden just smiled in characteristic manner. When asked about Secretary of State Mike Pompeo seemingly jocular remarked that there will a peaceful transmission to another Trump administration, President-elect Biden again laughed at it. But this joker Pompeo is wild and may have played many such wild cards when he was the Director of the dreaded Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and when he came to Sri Lanka for a brief visit late last month.
The once cotton picking black American people have composed many beautiful and inspiring spiritual songs. One of them goes like this, “Gone are the days when my heart was young and gay, gone are my friends from the cotton fields of yore, gone from this world to a better land I know, I hear the gentle voices calling old Black Joe.”
The cotton picking coloured American people, who for generations had been slaves, on November 3 played a major role in picking the most powerful man in the United States and in the world. Most independent political analysts believe it was the coloured Americans who carried Mr. Biden to a historic victory in the US Presidential Election.
Another equally historic factor was the election of the first woman and the first coloured woman Kamala Harris as the US Vice President. Kamala Harris’ mother Shyamala Gopalan Harris was born in India’s Tamil Nadu State and was a biomedical scientist. She immigrated to the US where she married Jamaican Donald Harris, an economist and professor emeritus at the well-known Stanford University in California. Kamala Harris herself graduated from the Howard University and the University of California. She was a Senator and the Attorney General of California. In her victory speech, watched live by millions of women and girls all over the world, Kamala Harris would have inspired them to dream the impossible dream. As a popular song says, “climb every mountain, search every sea and follow every rainbow until you find your dream. A dream that will need all the love you can give, every day of your life for as long as you live.”
In his much-awaited victory speech from his hometown at Wilmington in Delaware county of the state of Pennsylvania, President-elect Biden said he was humbled by the people’s confidence in him and pledged he would be a president who had a vision of uniting people of all parties and races and would not seek to cause divisions. He vowed he would be the President of all the people in the United States not just the blue or the Democratic states or the Red Republican states.
“I’ll work with all my heart, with the confidence of the whole people, to win the confidence of all of you. That is what America, I believe, is about. It’s about people. And that’s what our administration will be all about. I sought this office to restore the soul of America, to rebuild the backbone of this nation: the middle class. And to make America respected around the world again. And to unite us here at home. It’s the honour of my lifetime that so many millions of Americans have voted for that vision. Now the work of making that vision is real. It’s a task, the task of our time. The Bible tells us to everything there is a season, a time to build, a time to reap and a time to sow. and a time to heal. This is the time to heal in America,” President-elect Biden said.
