Lanka Walltiles PLC won a Merit award at the Presidential Environmental Awards 2017 (Chemical Industry category), organized by the Central Environmental Authority on 16th October 2017 at the BMICH.

The prestigious Presidential Environmental Awards are bestowed on institutions which take actions to protect and manage the quality of the environment through coordination, promotion, public participation, enforcement, appropriate technological intervention and environmental education. The objective of the awards is to promote ‘a cleaner and greener environment through service excellence’.

Lanka Walltiles PLC has consistently demonstrated its commitment to protect the environment by taking decisive steps to reduce energy consumption, cost of energy and consumption of natural resources, resulting in minimizing environmental pollution. Lanka Walltiles PLC values the quality of the environment and holds the ‘Environmental Protection License’ since the inception of its production facility.

Mindful of the energy-intensive nature of the tile manufacturing industry in which it operates, Lanka Walltiles PLC has adopted a slew of sustainable systems and processes to reduce its energy consumption. The company complies with all appropriate legal requirements which relate to the environmental aspects and provide the framework for setting and reviewing environment objectives and targets periodically.
Wastage from its production processes are at minimum levels as it carries out several initiatives to cut down defectives in each process and continuous improvements are undertaken to minimize production and quality related issues. Also, almost all the defective materials and products are recycled back to the production process – thereby reducing the collection of wastage. The defective in-process materials and tiles are recycled back to the production process.

Hazardous wastes which cannot be recycled in the production process are collected and incinerated to avoid any environmental pollution. The effluent waste water collected during the production process is chemically treated and purified. The purified water is recycled back to the production process hence reducing the fresh water consumption by a considerable amount. The balance water is released to the environment after confirming the quality of the water is acceptable and within the quality levels stipulated by local regulations. The quality of the treated water is checked by an accredited laboratory twice per year.

When it comes to preventing noise and dust pollution, the levels at the factory boundary are controlled well below the levels stipulated by the local regulations. These are checked annually by accredited laboratories with calibrated equipment. Machinery and Kiln modifications are regularly undertaken to increase efficiency.

In order to sustain the impact of these initiatives, Lanka Walltiles PLC educates its employees about environmental conservation and productivity improvements. Environmental related quality audits are carried out as per the Environmental Management System. All environmental related aspects are reviewed and discussed annually with the presence of the top management.
