Serendib Flour Mills recently came forward to support another well-intentioned cause by donating a 29 seater bus to The School for the Deaf, Ratmalana. Identifying and addressing the needs of The School for the Deafhas been a long standing CSR initiative of Serendib Flour Mills. They have been working closely with the students of the school by providing them with flour and baking lessons equipping them with necessary skill based education. Serendib Flour Mills is one of the foremost flour mills in Sri Lanka with an ultra-modern facility based at the Colombo Port.

In the past, the school faced various difficulties supplementing the student’s transportation requirements as they required frequent travel outside the school for various extra-curricular activities. Serendib Flour Mills stepped in once they identified this need and donated a bus to the school thus giving children access to transport enabling participation in sports events, and other extra-curricular activities.

The Ceylon School for the Deaf and the school for the Blind were established in the year 1912 to provide at-anytime education and vocational training for the deaf and the blind. They provide education to approximately 700 hearing and sight impaired children completely free of charge in three residential schools across the island. Governed by the Diocese of Colombo and managed by a Board of Trustees, the schools receive partial support for a limited number of approved cadre of teachers by the State, whilst the major portion of the expenses are raised by the Board of Trustees and provided by well-wishers as donations. The school provides quality and innovative education and vocational training and other services to impart the best possible knowledge to their students to ensure successful integration with the society upon leaving school.

Sharing his thoughts on this munificent act, Kevin O’leary – CEO, Serendib Flour Mills, stated, “We are indeed proud to have been able to make a difference and bring a smile to the children of this school. Sri Lanka has a long way to go in terms of creating equal opportunities for the differently abled. And we at Serendib Flour Mills hope to continuously support these children and assist them in their path to successful integration with society.”

Samanthika Jayasuriya – Principal, The School of the Deaf, sharing her appreciation, stated, “We are truly grateful for the support Serendib Flour Mills have provided us with throughout the year.
