Sri Lanka’s fashion scene recently saw the addition of a unique brand – Tribe Ceylon, a design studio seeking to create fusion between the traditional Sri Lankan identity and the latest international fashion trends.
The clothing brand is founded by Harsha Samaraweera, a young design graduate from the University of Moratuwa.
Tribe Ceylon draws inspiration from Western designs, but has struck a fine balance with Sri Lanka’s identity and traditions. “
An authentic fashion brand does not have a definite shape. It is always a work in progress,” said Samaraweera.
“The current crisis has an enormous impact on businesses, but we believe it also gives us the opportunity to take our identity to the world. We have so much to offer to the world and this crisis could be our stepping stone,” he added.
The young fashion designer aims to promote the ‘Made in Sri Lanka’ label through Tribe Ceylon and inspire other tribes to build their own brands.
He believes his background has added great value to his work as a designer and as an entrepreneur.
Harsh Lewter, a designer identity he created while studying at the University of Moratuwa has paved the path to create a successful brand like Tribe Ceylon.
