In its continuous efforts in revolutionizing the ICT sector, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel – the country’s National Mobile Service provider launched ‘Mobitel Upahara’ for state sector employees back in 2008. Today, in a move to further empower employees of the state sector, Mobitel along with the Ministry of Telecommunication & Information, now offers a value added internet service.

In line with the Government’s vision as per the Mahinda Chinthana Idiri Dakma programme to make Sri Lanka the Wonder of Asia, Mobitel has already initiated many a project to uplift the ICT sector of Sri Lanka. It is in line with these efforts that Mobitel has now introduced ‘Upahara Internet’ along with the Ministry of Telecommunication & Information Technology – thereby envisioning to improve not only the interaction and knowledge of those employed in the state sector but also that of their children and their families.

Upahara Internet now offers dongles free-of-charge to all existing Upahara customers who are state sector employees. The monthly rental on this package, offered with an attractive data bundle is only Rs 299/=.”

Speaking at the launch of the product, Mobitel’s CEO, Mr. Lalith De Silva emphasized that, “Mobitel has always dedicated itself towards supporting the Government in its efforts to develop ICT in Sri Lanka. We have already established several IT centres at grass-root levels, emphasizing our efforts in taking ICT to even the most remote areas. We have been successful at providing network coverage to many areas which are not yet under the purview of any other mobile service company in the country. While we work steadily towards building a knowledge-based economy, we strongly believe that access to technology is a necessity that should be experienced by each and every citizen of this nation.”

“We have always appreciated the state sector employees’ contribution for their efforts in uplifting this country. We must value this service they provide and we are willing to always support them towards their further development,” he said, “Just as the Mobitel Upahara service became an economic relief for these employees, this internet package will definitely help them to further enhance their knowledge and also encourage them to be more digitally savvy, which will undoubtedly help them to be successful in their future efforts.”

Sharing his views on Mobitel’s revolutionary approach towards state sector employees, the Minister of Telecommunication and Information Technology, Hon. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya added; “At present, ICT has become a necessary pre-requisite for the growth of industrial, services and agricultural sectors. In accordance with His Excellency, President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s vision to make this country the communication hub of Asia, one of the government’s objectives is to empower the state service by means of ICT. In making this vision a reality we have worked closely with Mobitel - the National Mobile Service Provider. Thanks to this initiative, with internet services being provided at such a reasonable price, I believe state sector employees now have the opportunity to further improve their knowledge and be empowered to face the digital world.”
