Army stuns Navy with thrilling win

Army Sports Club pulled of an upset win over Navy Sports Club as they edged out the latter 18 (2 tries, 1 conversion, 1 penalty) to 13 (1 try, 1 conversion, 2 penalties) at Havelock Park on Friday (4).

The teams were tied on six points each at half-time courtesy of two penalties each from Navy full back Thilina Weerasinghe and Army fly-half Tharindu Madushan.

Army had a brilliant start to their second half as their star performer Dhanushka Thalwatte dived over the line to extend their lead 11 to 06.

They delivered the knockout punch five minutes from the full-time whistle when Kalana Devapriya touched down and Isuru Medegedara smashed home the conversion to lead 18-06.

The Navy pack produced a consolation try in the penultimate minute when Sajith Saranga scored his second try in two games which was converted by Weerasinghe.

But in the Army showed their class and secured a crucial win in what has been a very average season for the soldiers.
